About My Disappearance #1

•$2 – ¼ SIZE. 52 PGS.•

An absolutely wonderful zine by Dave of On Subbing about his battle with Crohn’s Disease. In this first issue Dave speaks of the first 4 months on having the disease. This includes his onset of symptoms (not being able to eat, diarrhea, dropping to 99 lbs), the diagnosis process (learning about the experience of a colonoscopy), and adjusting to life with Crohn’s. I feel that discussion of chronic illness is extremely valuable, in that many of us are combating some sort of disease in our lives and we should all be prepared to be supportive of one another.

Brainscan #21 Irreconcilable Differences

•$3 – ½ SIZE. 44PGS.•

In Brainscan #21 Alex tackles the difficult subject of ending an abusive relationship with her long-term partner. It was very courageous of her to share her experience and so important as it examines emotional abuse, how it can be hard to recognize, and harder to accept. Alex not only goes over the examples of abuse but her process of healing and how the past affects her present life. Please read with care, can be triggering.

Brainscan #23

•$2 – ¼ LEGAL. 36 PGS.•

Travel stories grace the pages of this issue of Brainscan. Alex takes us with her as she travels the world over the past several years. This includes a Baltic cruise with her family with a Polish admirer, post high school spontaneous boredom trips, and various zine tours. Join Alex as she dyes her hair Alpine Green, obtains an Oregon driver’s license, breaks three car doors, and meets a woman in NYC who thinks people only travel to “get laid.”

Brainscan #24 and #25

•$5 - MINI ZINE & ½ LEGAL SIZE – 32 PGS & 76 PGS (PLUS MINI EPILOGUE)•

A Brainscan zine double feature! Both issues #24 and #25 of Brainscan come together in this lovely screen-printed envelope. Ever wanted to know where the name Brainscan came from or what Alex’s real name is? Issue #24 is a little zine filled with FAQs and interesting tidbits about Alex Wrekk. In Brainscan #25 we get a massive and beautifully laid out zine containing the stories that Alex had written during the time she was enduring many relationship changes… both for better and worse. She says this is somewhat of a companion issue to Brainscan #21, but from the inside perspective rather than looking back and deciphering what was happening at the time. We find how Alex had rekindled her relationship with her current partner after her dissolved marriage, wandering through flashbacks and more current tales. Also included is a mini zine epilogue for issue #25!

Brainscan #25.5

•$1.50 – 1/8 legal. 32 pgs.•

Brainscan #25.5 is Alex's 24 Hour Zine Challenge of 2010. Yes, this zine was created from start to finish in 24 hours. It contains the stories of all the post office boxes that Alex has had in her zinester history. I like how these post box changes intertwine with life changes. Very awesome layout in this zine as well.

Brainscan #26

•$2 – ¼ SIZE. 32 PGS.•

This issue of Brainscan is subtitled, “So, what's the deal with you and Microcosm?” Yes, this zine answers the questions as to why Alex is no longer involved in Microcosm Publishing due to her past relationship with Joe Biel and his emotional abuse towards her. In addition, this zine explains why many people are choosing to boycott Microcosm Publishing in an effort to see Joe complete an accountability process for his actions. This is a good follow up if you have read Brainscan #21, “Irreconcilable Differences.”

Chronic Fatshionista #1

•$1.50 – ¼ SIZE. 24 PGS.•

This is a great zine from a woman in Belgium who writes about dealing with chronic pain issues. In this zine she talks about receiving a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia and visiting a pain clinic as well as some of the symptoms and doctors she had to deal with leading up to the proper diagnosis.

Cometbus #52

•$3 - ½ SIZE 64 PGS.•

This 52nd issue of Cometbus is subtitled The Spirit of St. Louis -or- How to Break Your Own Heart, a tragedy in 24 parts. I'd go with more the Spirit of STL title myself, as this zine takes us through living in a punk house in St. Louis with a group of punks referred to as The Rats. Like always Aaron makes you wish you were there living through the passing roommates and now-defunct house bands, even the rise and fall of a cafe/community space which starts in the house as a protest to the one across the street. You can really get lost in the lives of all the vibrant characters through their love, heartbreak, and accidents. This issue is a real throwback to the Cometbus days of the 90s, and exactly what I have been waiting for from him for the past few years.

Cometbus #53

•$3 - 1/2 size 60 pgs•

This is an issue of Cometbus where Aaron shares the pages with long time Cometbus contributer Maddalena Polletta. Lots of short interconnected stories about the usual topics covered in Cometbus, punk, bookstores, coffee, life, people, family, sickness, death. Just like most issues of this zine, it's hard to put down and you will lose yourself in the stories.

Cometbus #54

•$4 – 1/2 size. 100 pgs.•

Aaron was a roadie for Green Day back in the 90s. What would it be like to tour with them for 2 weeks now? Aaron documents his time spent touring Asia with Green Day now in the pinnacle of their fame.

dad.

•$2 - 1/4 size 32 pgs.•

Timothy wrote about his father, who had passed away from cancer 4 years prior, every day last January. This zine is a result of some of those writings. His father was from South Africa, coming to the states in the 70s. A very strong and brave zine to publish, Timothy tackles the process of losing his father by celebrating the stories he told and his political activism in the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Writing about loss is an important step to take in the healing process, and I appreciate Timothy putting out this zine.

Deafula

•$1 – ¼ SIZE. 24 PGS.•

This is a great zine written by a woman in Philadelphia who is deaf. The interesting thing about how I obtained the zine was that we quickly traded at Philly Zine Fest and I had absolutely no idea she was deaf until I was on the train back to Richmond reading her zine. That is exactly one of the topics covered in Deafula. She covers on how she passes for hearing regularly due to the fact that she reads lips incredibly well and learned to speak before she became deaf. In addition the subject matter of Deafula covers on proper etiquette hearing people should use around deaf folks, being part of the deaf community, and being deaf in a mostly hearing world. In all honesty this has been my first exposure to deafness as I do not have anyone in my life who is deaf. I learned a tremendous amount and recommend this zine to all.

Deafula #2

•$1 – ¼ SIZE. 24 PGS.•

Another great issue of Deafula! This issue explains what many deaf people go through when dealing with health insurance. It is absolutely shocking and horrible. Most treatments or technology that deaf people use to help their hearing are not covered and are extremely expensive. A very eye opening and informative zine.

The Death of a Salesman

•$5.00 - a bit larger than 1/2 size 36 pgs•

This is an absolutely beautiful comic zine by Edd Baldry of the UK and published by a wonderful collective called Last Hours. The Death of a Salesman is a selection by Edd called Ian Tomlinson, the G20, and Bad Apples that was originally published in a larger anthology in the UK called Excessive Force about police violence. The comic shows the main character deal with witnessing a protestor's death at the hands of the police, the effect it has on him, and the aftermath. The Death of a Salesman is an incredibly gripping and emotional comic. It also includes an essay of various incidents of police violence in the UK. Highly recommended.

DIY or Don't We #2

•$3 – 1/2 SIZE. 40 PGS.•

I am happy to see a second installment of this awesome zine out of Olympia, WA. Compiled of eight stories from folks across the world working together. From the For The Birds Collective, a feminist collective, in NYC to the Cowley Club, an all volunteer cafe, in the UK. It is appreciated as someone who does work in a collective group to see the problems and solutions other collectives have been through. There are also pieces on gardens, self-care in the DIY community, and searching for community. A very inspiring zine that makes me want to get up and get to work immediately!

Doris #27

•$2.00 - 1/2 size 28 pgs.•

Cindy's alphabet series continues with this final installment U thru Z. Even though it is part of a series, this issue of Doris stands strong on it's own. Chock full of everything inspiring that Cindy brings in all of her writing, she begins with the story of leaving home for Reed college in Portland. In Portland she finds solace and friendship within the local Food Not Bombs chapter. Cindy also writes about touring with her band and meeting friends plus rekindling old relationships along the way. The part of Doris #27 that really spoke volumes to me was the part on what happens when the punks grow up and how we can use our talents and what we have learned to live lives which contribute to our communities. A wonderful and uplifting read.

Everything Good & Beautiful

•$5 – 1/2 Legal. 40 PGS.•

A wonderful graphic novel, story by Bucket Siler and illustrated by Frey Anya. We follow the main character as she tries to make a list and catalog everything good and beautiful. As she struggles with the project and becomes frustrated a random stranger shows up to help (with a magic umbrella). This is a very heartwarming story.

Feedback #9

•$2 – 1/4 Legal. 60 PGS.•

Great comic zine that reviews going to punk shows. Also a ton of zine reviews!

Filling the Void

•$4 – 1/2 legal. 60 pgs.•

Amazing compilation zine put out by Cindy Crabb of Doris and her sister Katy about getting sober. Many interviews with all sorts of people from different walks of life tell their tales of sobriety and what worked or didn't work for them as well as what keeps them sober now.

Get Fit for the Pit #1

•$2 – 1/2 SIZE. 20 PGS.•

Get Fit for the Pit is a compilation zine that focuses on health and fitness from a punk/activist perspective. The first issue includes 7 stories and 1 comic about shaking off the shackles of the lack of importance placed on health and fitness in the punk scene and working with our bodies to become healthier. Some of the writers include: Ramsey from List zine, Maranda from Telegram Ma'am, Chris from Kissoff, Nicole (that's me!) from Introvert, Korinna from Roots of Hope as well as others. Topics range from Roller Derby to Running to Rugby and more! I feel it is really important to address issues of health and wellness as we age, especially coming from a background where we might not have taken as good care of ourselves as we should have. We can fix this! Also, I am looking for more contributions for upcoming issues so if you are interested please get in touch: getfitforthepit@gmail.com.

High on Burning Photographs #5/Asylum #1

•$2 – 1/2 SIZE. 40 PGS.•
(Picture is not of zine, trying to find my scan of this one!)

This is a great split zine done between Matt and Ocean. This is a unique split due to the fact that Matt is currently incarcerated having met Ocean via a prisoner book program. He had written a delightful letter to the program which Ocean enjoyed so much that they became pals and thus a split zine ensued. Matt writes of a sick cellmate and how he basically became his caretaker, how he created a home in Folsom Prison, and his lack of parole plans. Ocean shares an amazing story of helping her employer attempt to recreate a Jackson Pollock painting, how she broke into her queer identity, and homesickness for NYC. Both zinesters share some books they have read recently as well.

Introvert #4

•$1.00•

Introvert #4 is the zine that I published in October 2005, coming back into zines after a six year long hiatus. Ten different short pieces throughout. The style is that sort of teetering between fiction and non twisting words in an enigmatic puzzle. Everything is based on a true story or at least a vivid daydream. Topics include an inspiring road trip, flings, first love, and dealing with being an introvert. This issue was once described as tasting like sourdough bread with really good peanut butter.

Introvert #5

•$1.00•

One of my more honest and raw zines that I have written. Introvert #5 strays from my usual enigmatic writing style. I put my insecurities and anxieties out there in this issue. I talk about body image, gender confusion and my irrational fears. Also a short piece on feeling alienated amongst the crowd I call community. Be mindful of your own mental health when reading, could be triggering.

Introvert #6

•$1.50•

This zine is dedicated to and about my nephew Ethan who passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in 2007. It took awhile for me to come to the point in which I could write about his death, but I felt it was something important. Introvert #6 deals with the past two years and how I have tried to figure out how to support my family through this tragedy and come to terms with my own feelings about it. I also speak about my future fears in having my own children. Included are also valuable resources for information on SIDS and SIDS organizations. Please read with caution, could be triggering.

Learning Good Consent

•$3.00 - 1/2 size 46 pgs•

A very important zine put together by Cindy of Doris zine that teaches about consent. Articles written on the topic of learning about how consent works, and how to integrate it into all of your sexual experiences. There are also tips on holding consent workshops, how to identify an abusive partner, and how safe sex isn't just about latex.

List #14

•$4.00 - 1/2 size 56 pgs.•

List is a zine put out by an extremely talented artist named Ramsey. Her illustrations are absolutely amazing and grace the pages of this zine that she writes in lists. These lists contained in List are not short lists of favorite movies or books, they go far beyond. Ramsey's lists tell her story, a perzine in list form. This issue deals mainly with her living in Chicago but wanting a change of scenery. Topics include, things she wants to do while still in Chicago, making friends, getting physically fit, future plans, and things she is proud of. I've been a fan of List for several years and each issue just gets better.

Love Letters to Monsters #3/Alabama Grrrl #9

•SPLIT•
•$3.00 -1/4 size 80 pgs•

After closing Paper Trail distro, and thinking she had retired from zines, Ciara put out a new issue of Love Letters to Monsters. This time as a split with the long running but on a long (about 10 year) break, Alabama Grrrl by Ailecia. I feel it is particularly important to note that both Ciara and Ailecia are now over 30 and are still writing zines which makes me very excited! Ciara writes about moving to Lawrence, Kansas so her partner can attend grad school, her mother's conversion to Islam, the meaning of “community” and how that word seems to have lost meaning, living with a chronic pain illness, and developing her writing. Ailecia gives some solid advice on anyone considering grad school, punk houses and the punk community in Lawrence Kansas, and accountability processes (or lackthereof) in the community. One of the best zines I read in 2010! Highly recommended!

No More Coffee #2

•$2.00 - 1/2 size 32 pgs.•

A great zine of short fiction. The kind of fiction that sometimes blurs into reality. Good stuff.

Nothing Rhymes #5

•$2.00 - 1/4 size. 40 pgs. •

Chelsea begins this issue of Nothing Rhymes with a story about taking a risk and moving from Pittsburgh to Providence. She then writes about the death of her cat and the struggle with his poor health conditions, whereas it is incredibly sad, I think that her writing about this is very strong and important. Nothing Rhymes #5 wraps up with making new friends and the very crucial fortune cookie message “Never give up.”

Number Nothing #2

•$1.00 – ½ size. 12 pgs.•

Two short stories of the writer’s childhood. Very short and sweet. One deals with the unsuspecting bout of dealing with the confusion of sexuality alone at a young age. The other finds us watching an independent child fixing his own breakfast to his father’s disapproval. Also, a really hilarious comic included in the back of when the “5 Second Rule” does not apply.

Sick

•$5 - 1/2 size paperback 88 pgs•

Sick is a collection of essays by people within the DIY/radical/alternative communities regarding their physical illnesses. As it is stated in the introduction, this zine is intended for a variety of audiences, including those who may have never experienced illness themselves. Not only is this collection of writing important for learning how to support those of our peers who are ill, but also as a starting point to take action on building a culture of care within our communities. Some of the topics covered in this zine are kidney disease, chronic migraines, cancer, Hepatitis, heart disease, etc. This is such an important compilation and I urge everyone to read it to have a better understanding of supporting those in our lives who may be sick.

Sub Rosa #3

•$1.00 - 1/8 legal 32 pgs.•

In this third issue of Sub Rosa, Taryn starts off with a hint of a love daydream. She then shifts gears into an incident where she witnessed a parent being abusive towards their child at a store. It takes her everything not to explode in rage, being reminded of her own upbringing. There is also a piece on why Taryn has decided to not keep a paper journal at this time due to the disappointment she would feel, recording uneventful days. Small and text heavy, Sub Rosa is a roller coaster of emotion that I love to experience with each read.

Toothworm #4

•$1.50 - 1/4 size 36 pgs•

I love the strange little illustrations in Toothworm as they weave in with text about childhood, sex, isolation, and anger. This issue begins with the literal bandaging of a wound due to a bike wreck and morphs into bandaging the wounds caused by anxiety, losing a job, and watching a father go through alcohol withdrawal. Beautiful writing that paints vivid images, a highly recommended read.

Zephyr #1

•$2 - 1/2 size 36 pgs•

Phoebe writes Zephyr which is a zine written in poetic prose. Much about love, traveling, life and relationships. Cut and pasted, handwritten, typewritten, scraps of paper all come together to give a perfect visual into what is happening in Phoebe's mind.
